BSC HCN Virtual Discussion Group – Disablist Hate Crime: Acts, Misconstructions and the Process of Othering
Wednesday 13 March 2024, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm GMT, online (UK)
Valerie Houghton – University of Salford
Reported cases of disablist hate crimes are increasing but these are the tip of the iceberg, most go un-reported, perhaps because so few are successfully prosecuted. Many acts are considered abuse and fall under the safeguarding process. Disabled people do not have equity of justice.
My PhD research took a grounded theory approach to analysing 100 cases of disablist hate crime to better understand the acts of perpetrators and the responses of the actors in the criminal justice system. These were cases identified by the police, safeguarding practitioners, and those in the public realm. My findings identify the misconstructions of disablist hate crime acts; and the barriers to successful recognition, case development and prosecution. I suggest moving towards a new typology of disablist hate crime which better captures these acts and reflects the lived experience of disabled people.
About this discussion group:
This discussion group is part of the BSC Hate Crime Network, and has been designed to create a supportive space for PGRs and ECRs who are researching within the broad area of hate studies. PGRs could include students studying at MA and doctoral level, and ECRs includes those researchers who are within five years of receiving their doctorate. The group brings PGRs and ECRs together to share their research projects, discuss methodological issues, and consider best practices when researching sensitive topics.
The group will touch upon, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Working with and supporting victims
- Managing the sensitivity of hate studies research
- Ethical issues
- Working with policy-makers and practitioners
- Creative and inclusive research methods
