Annual Scarman Lecture 2020: Policing, Race and Criminology in the UK

Using the Lammy Report, and a 15 minute introduction to some of its insights and larger implications by its author the Rt Honourable MP David Lammy as a conversation starter, this year’s Scarman Lecture hosted by the School of Criminology at the University of Leicester is an opportunity for a timely public-facing discussion between experts, professionals and criminologists about Policing, Race and Criminology in the UK in 2020.

Responding to the conversation-starter we have the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police and head of Counter Terrorism, Mr Ian Hopkins. We also have panellists Dr Suzella Palmer and Dr Timi Osidipe from Bedfordshire University.

Some of the themes that will be discussed are:

• Structural racism, society and policing
• Institutional prejudice, policing and the systemic reproduction of social inequalities
• Individuals, stereotypes and policing via group profiling
• Race, policing and criminology

Moderated questions from the audience will also be catered for in the final 40 mins of the session. Please email lan11@le.ac.uk to submit any questions for the panel by the 25th September 2020.
