Holocaust Memorial Day at Sussex 2023

Wednesday 1 February 2023, 14:00 – 18:00 GMT, Brighton, UK

Our annual Holocaust Memorial Day event will take place at the University of Sussex on Wednesday 1 February 2023, from 2pm to 6pm.

The programme will be split into two sessions:

SESSION 1:

Testimony from our guest speaker, Holocaust Survivor, Manfred Goldberg BEM.

Manfred was born in Kassel, Germany in 1930. Following Kristallnacht, his father was able to get to the UK but Manfred, his mother and younger brother, were not so lucky. They managed to survive in Kassel until 1941 after which followed an incredible odyssey lasting several years, and one which his brother would not survive. The Riga ghetto, Precu labour camp, Stutthof concentration camp, Stolp labour camp, Burggraben, and many other terrible experiences befell them. Eventually Manfred and his mother were liberated and after an extended period of convalescence, they arrived in the UK in September 1946. Manfred was awarded a BEM for services to Holocaust education and awareness in 2019.

Q&A chaired by Professor Ivor Gaber, Professor of Journalism, University of Sussex.

SESSION 2:

Screening of the film Reckonings

They met in secret to negotiate the unthinkable – compensation for the survivors of the largest mass genocide in history. Survivors were in urgent need of help, but how could reparations be determined for the unprecedented destruction and suffering of a people? Reckonings explores this untold true story set in the aftermath of the Holocaust.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Roberta Grossman, Reckonings recounts the tense negotiations between Jewish and German leaders. Under the constant threat of violence, they forged ahead, knowing it would never be enough but hoping it could at least be an acknowledgement and a step towards healing.

Following the showing of the film there will be a discussion with Professor Constantin Goschler, Chair of Contemporary History, Ruhr-University Bochum, Berlin and Professor Gideon Reuveni, Director, Weidenfeld Institute of Jewish Studies/Centre for German-Jewish Studies. Professor Goschler’s numerous books on reparations include Guilt and Debts: The politics of compensation for Nazi victims, 1945-2000 (2008) and more recently, Historical Dialogue and the Prevention of Mass Atrocities [ed. with Elazar Barkan & James Waller] (2020).

We are most grateful to The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) who are kindly supporting this important event.

This event is open to all students, staff and alumni and our wider community. However, booking is essential.
