BSC Hate Crime Network Virtual Book Launch: Understanding and Addressing Anti-LGBTQI Online Hate

Monday 4 November 2024, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm GMT, online (UK)

Welcome to our inaugural British Society of Criminology Hate Crime Network Book Launch event, Monday 4th November 2-3pm.

We are starting with a discussion on ‘Understanding and addressing anti-LGBTQI online hate’, chaired by Professor Jon Garland. The event will be looking at the recent publications of Dr Rachel Keighley and her book, Researching Hate as an Activist: Exploring LGBTQ+ Online Hate, Its Impacts, and Our Responsibility Towards Equality and Dr Piotr Godzisz’s book, Global Queer Politics.

Piotr’s book, State Responses to Anti-LGBT Violence: Poland in a European Context (Global Queer Politics), offers a much-needed analysis of the difficulties associated with providing state protection from violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity in Europe. Focusing on Poland as a national case study, the book provides a holistic analysis of internal and external factors influencing state-level policy outcomes. By focusing on hate crime advocacy, the book fills a gap in queer scholarship, which has overlooked this aspect of mobilisation.

Rachel’s book, Researching Hate as an Activist: Exploring LGBTQ+ Online Hate, Its Impacts, and Our Responsibility Towards Equality, introduces the reader to research as activism, exploring how academic research has an obligation to be accountable to the communities we serve. It presents a reconsideration of researching hate that prioritizes the knowledge and expertise of community members above the academic researcher.

The event will be held on Microsoft Teams. Tickets are free, please sign up here for your free ticket.
