Modern Law Review Seminar – Gender-Based Violence Across Borders: Challenges and Opportunities

Thursday 24 April 2025, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm BST, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

Join us for a Modern Law Review funded seminar which explores gender-based violence across borders: challenges and opportunities to establishing routes to safety in a migratory world. The conference will bring together leading academics, practitioners, activists and organisations from across Europe. Tickets are available (free of charge) for 40 attendees to attend the seminar and engage in discussion with the speakers. Key themes explored include:

  • The nature, scale and forms of cross-border gender-based violence.
  • The impact of developing technologies and social media on tracking and surveillance.
  • The reality of seeking legal protections and remedies in a foreign jurisdiction.
  • The impact of a victim’s migrant or insecure immigrant status on seeking refuge in a new jurisdiction.
  • Securing the safe return of victims of forced marriage and female genital mutilation.
  • The interrelationship between domestic abuse and child abduction.
  • The impact of the UK’s departure from the European Union on victim safety when travelling across borders.
  • The desirability of law reform to better support victims moving between jurisdictions and the potential form and substance of such reform.

The seminar will be held in person at Northumbria Law School. Northumbria Law School is located in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne. The event will begin at 9am and conclude at 5pm. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. We will meet in the fourth floor hub for refreshments and then move to CCE1-403.
