NEW Summer Course in Global Hate Studies at Ontario Tech University!
Develop your capacity to recognize and confront Canadian and global manifestations of hate through this intensive course.
Co-led by Dr. Barbara Perry, Canada’s foremost authority in hate studies, and Dr. Jennifer Schweppe, a leading European hate studies scholar. This course is designed for both graduate and senior undergraduate students.
Hybrid Format: Online from May 6 to August 6, meeting for two half days at both the beginning and end of the semester, and 5 full days midway through (Week 6 June 10 to 14).
The full week of classes will feature an array of guest speakers from across the globe.
Course Description:
Develop your capacity to recognize and confront Canadian and global manifestations
of hate through this intensive course. Leading international scholars and
practitioners will share their expertise to enhance your learning.
Course Objectives:
1. To cultivate an awareness of the depth and breadth of diverse manifestations of
hate as a social problem, including, but not limited to, motivation, nature of
violence, prevalence of crime, etc..
2. To examine the structural and ideological foundations of hateful expressions and
actions.
3. To develop the analytical tools to think clearly and reflectively about the
relationship between ideology, politics, identity and hate.
4. To enable students to consider the range of disciplinary and methodological
approaches to understanding hate.
5. To provide students with the capacity to critically consider the range of options in
combatting hate.
Course Structure/Approach:
This course will take an online seminar format, with ongoing dialogue and
interaction. The onus for exploring the issues raised in the readings is on the
students. I have invited a number of experts in the field to share their insights as a
means of helping you to better understand the dynamics of extremism, as well as
current initiatives intended to counter it.
