Tackling Extremism: Effective Intervention and Re-engagement

Wednesday 19th August 2015, 9:00-16:30pm, London

Scotland Yard highlighted a dramatic change in the volume, range and pace of counter-terrorism activity in 2014, with over 200 terrorism-related arrests in England, Scotland and Wales. Conflicts including Syria and the increasing influence of Islamic State continue to draw in people from the UK with over 60 British families requesting Police support for possible radicalisation of their children last year. These families are often the early warning sign of extremism and we will share how best to promote community cohesion and support at a local level. Today’s briefing will allow time for knowledge sharing on key strategies and support groups working to break down this cycle of radicalisation. It is clear that social media can be a most powerful tool to promote violent ideologies – how can we use its potential to support de-radicalisation and re-engagement? The Prevent strand of the Government’s Counter Terrorism strategy aims to reach the people that are most vulnerable to radicalisation. How can we empower and support the communities where this threat is most acute?

With these issues in mind this key policy briefing will present the new challenges and how best to tackle radicalisation and re-build community cohesion.
