Call for Papers: INHS Biennial Conference ‘Hate, Democracy, and Human Rights’

The International Network for Hate Studies and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights are delighted to announce plans for our rescheduled conference, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference will now be held fully online, and we look forward to engaging with colleagues and friends in this new but exciting format.

Contemporary patterns of hate and hostility – hate speech, hate crime, hate groups – clearly challenge the human rights of targeted communities. Hate in its many guises has the potential to limit individuals’ and communities’ capacity to fully engage in the society around them. This means, too, that hatred threatens democratic processes, as we have seen globally in, for example, disinformation campaigns that malign immigrants, refugees and their supporters. Indeed, politics itself has become a key locus for expressions of xenophobia, transphobia, misogyny and a host of other “isms.” We urge participants to consider the ways in which human rights and democracy are challenged by hate crime, right-wing extremism, online hate and political discourses of hate.

The conference this year will be different to other years, to allow for maximum participation. You can deliver a paper which will be uploaded and categorised on the INHS website in and available for anyone to access. This is the asynchronous element of the conference. There will also be a synchronous element to the conference, details of which will be disseminated in due course.

Asynchronous Papers

To participate by presenting an asynchronous paper, you submit a standard conference abstract using the form HERE no later than Friday 30^th October 2020. If your paper is accepted, you then record your presentation yourself, and send it to the INHS conference team. We will categorise your paper, and upload it to the conference website in a new ‘conference paper library’ section. During the week of the INHS conference, the details of, and link to, your paper, will be send to the nearly 1000 individuals who are signed up to receive the INHS monthly newsletter along with other papers in a similar theme. To participate by presenting a paper, you should have facilities to record a 20 minute paper. Your presentation does not need to be professionally recorded – a simple voice over PowerPoint presentation will suffice – but the INHS have no capacity to facilitate this. You will receive guidance on recording your presentation on acceptance of your abstract. In exceptional circumstances, where you do not have the facility to record your presentation, you can submit a short paper for uploading on the website.

REGISTRATION FEES

Registration fees will be GBP£20 for academics and professionals, and attendance will be free of charge for those from civil society, for students, and for the unwaged.
