Call for Papers: Transphobic Hate Crime Edited Book

This is a call for contributions to an edited collection which focuses on transphobia
and transphobic hate crime. Despite growing interest, there remains a limited
amount of research into transphobic hate crimes and this collection aims to address
this gap.

We welcome both empirical and theoretical contributions, from academics,
practitioners and community organisations. Topics of interest include, but are not
limited to:
 – Contemporary debates in Transphobic hate crime
 – Intersectional Perspectives on Transphobic hate crimes
 – International Perspectives on Transphobic hate crimes
-  Institutional Transphobia
-  Transphobic hate crime and Human Rights
-  Non-binary People’s Experiences of Transphobic hate crimes
-  Transphobic Hate Crime & The Criminal Justice System
-  Responding to Transphobic Hate Crime
-  Media Representations of Trans Communities

Interested academics, practitioners and community members should submit a 300-
word abstract to Ben Colliver, Jane Healy & Katie McBride by Friday 24th November via email to:

It is anticipated that first drafts of chapters will be submitted in summer 2024, with
the final manuscript being delivered to the publisher in January 2025.

Ben Colliver is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Birmingham City University. He
is a steering group member of the British Society of Criminology Hate Crime
Network. He has published widely in the areas of transphobic hate crime, online hate
speech and wider issues of LGBTQ+ representation.

Jane Healy is a Principal Academic in Criminology at Bournemouth University. She
is a steering group member of the British Society of Criminology Hate Crime Network
and a panel representative on the Crown Prosecution Service Wessex’s Hate Crime
Panel. Jane’s interests lie in victim perspectives and voices, and has published in the
areas of disability hate crime and intersectionality.

Katie McBride is a lecturer in Criminology at the University of Plymouth. Her key
research interests lie in examining hate from a critical perspective with a particular
focus on the harms of hate experienced by trans individuals. Her publications
explore how adverse childhood experiences, communities of support and structures
of governance have impacted on the lived experience of trans individuals.
