Hybrid Discussion – How to Build a Cohesive Society

Tim Besley, School Professor of Economics and Political Science and Director of the Programme on Cohesive Capitalism will chair a discussion looking at how we can overcome social division and create a more cohesive society. 

Meet our speakers and chair 

Margaret Levi (@margaretlevi) is Professor of Political Science, Senior Fellow, Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law, Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, the former Sara Miller McCune Director and current Faculty Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS), Senior Fellow of the Woods Institute, and co-director of Ethics, Society and Technology, Stanford University. She is Jere L. Bacharach Professor Emerita of International Studies in the Department of Political Science at the University of Washington. Levi is author or coauthor of numerous articles and books, including Of Rule and Revenue; Consent, Dissent, and Patriotism); Analytic Narratives; Cooperation Without Trust?; and In the Interest of Others. She serves on several boards and has been a visiting fellow in multiple institutes and universities globally. 

Marc Stears (@mds49) is the inaugural Director of the UCL Policy Lab. Marc has previously been Director of the Sydney Policy Lab at the University of Sydney, CEO of the New Economics Foundation, Professor of political theory at the University of Oxford and chief speechwriter to the UK Labour Party. He is the author of several books from the world’s leading presses, including Out of the Ordinary. Along with his co-author Tom Baldwin, he has just completed a new book entitled England: Seven Myths that Changed a Nation and How to Set them Straight. 

Tim Besley is School Professor of Economics and Political Science and W. Arthur Lewis Professor of Development Economics in the Department of Economics at LSE. He is also a member of the National Infrastructure Commission. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and British Academy and a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Economic Association and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His main research interests are in political economy and development.
