Webinar – Borders of Hate: Defining and Preventing Extremism in the Digital Era

Thursday 6 May 2021, 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm EDT, online (Canada)

While the new social media “Parler” attracts increasing numbers of extremist groups and individuals thanks to its lack of content moderation, we are increasingly confronted to complex virtual universes organized around hateful signs, symbols, and expressions. This webinar offers, firstly, an answer to the core question related to the issue at stake: What is hateful and what is not? Secondly, it will suggest a conceptual framework to approach the phenomena: participants will be introduced to the concepts of hateful acts, crimes, incidents and discourses. Thirdly, a reflection on the diverse mechanisms and strategies deployed online to spread violent and hateful discourses will be proposed. The webinar will also present various types and forms of extremist or hateful content found on social media platforms, and will reflect on the existing and possible solutions to deal with online hate outbursts.

Reminder: The zoom link to the webinar will be sent in the confirmation email once your registration is completed on Eventbrite. A second reminder email is sent to participants two days prior to the event date which also includes the zoom link.
