Community Responses to Hate Crime and Incidents
According to Stats Canada, hate crime in Alberta rose 39% in 2015, the highest increase seen across the country. This workshop will take participants through a process of understanding the historical foundations and impacts of hate, to gaining awareness and knowledge about the legislation around hate crime, and providing strategies and tools on how to respond to hate at a community level.

Discussion will include:

  • The role, history and work of the Alberta Hate Crimes Committee
  • The definition, causes, and impact of hate crimes and hate incidents
  • Supporting legislation and the Criminal Code of Canada
  • What you can do to support victims of hate crimes and hate incidents
  • What rights you have as victims of crime?
