Annual Public Conversation – TELL MAMA: Countering Intolerance, Hate and Bigotry Online

Wednesday 18 February 2015, 18:30 – 20:30pm

Chaired by Channel 4’s Fatima Manji, and with a keynote speech by former DCLG Minister, Shahid Malik,  the event will bring together a panel of researchers and practitioners to explore the language, nature and impacts of online hate and to debate the potentials for addressing cyber hate crimes. Other speakers will include the Telegraph’s Jamie Bartlett from Demos, Dave Rich from the Community Security Trust, comedienne Ava Vidal (TBC) and Helen Belcher of Transwatch.

Cyber-hate is one of the most difficult areas to monitor and to address, particularly when social media guidelines do not provide redress for users when they are targeted, trolled and abused on-line.

More recently, this subject has come to the forefront of mainstream press sources and through the Caroline Criado Perez on-line hate case that was widely publicised. There are therefore potential implications for all users of social media and particularly when there are national or international incidents such as the murder of Lee Rigby which led to a very large rise in anti-Muslim hatred and the recent Gaza war, which led to a rise in anti-Semitism in July 2014. We are therefore hoping that you may join us for this event to look at this most pressing of issues in the on-line world.

This event is being held in London, precise venue TBC.
