IALT Spring Discourse: Hate Speech and Crime

Friday 19 April 2024, 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm BST, Belfast, UK

The 2024 Irish Association of Law Teachers (IALT) Spring Discourse will take place at Ulster University’s Belfast campus at 4.00pm on Friday 19 April. The theme of this year’s Spring Discourse is hate speech and crime. This is an important and timely topic, not only because the legal regimes in both jurisdictions on the island are currently under review, but also because we are seeing increasing polarisation, misinformation and ‘othering’ of individuals and groups across society.

The speakers will include Professor Jennifer Schweppe of Limerick University along with a representative from the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission. Professor Schweppe holds considerable expertise in the field, nationally, in NI (having been a member of the Expert Group for the NI review on hate crime legislation) and internationally (e.g. co-director of the International Network for Hate Studies). Details of the NIHRC speaker will be added to the Eventbrite page shortly.

The event will be followed by a drinks reception sponsored by Ulster University’s School of Law.
