Islamophobia Citizens’ Assembly

Saturday 10 June 2023, 10:45 am – 3:00 pm BST, Ilford, UK

Who we are and what we do?

Redbridge Equalities and Community Council (RECC) is human rights charitable organisation. RECC aim to challenge all forms of discrimination and prejudice and promote equality and good relations in Redbridge. We provide vital services through advice advocacy to help all, including the most vulnerable in our Redbridge Community to access services, help and support they need.

Who is invited to the Citizens’ Assembly?

RECC welcomes people from all faith and non-faith backgrounds to Citizens’ Assembly to challenge Islamophobia and other forms of hate crimes and prejudices in Redbridge.

What is the proposed definition of Islamophobia?

In 2018, the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on British Muslims proposed a definition of Islamophobia as follows: “Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.” This definition has been widely debated, thus has not been formally adopted by the UK government. Instead, the government has acknowledged the need to tackle anti-Muslim hatred and discrimination.

Why is the discussion on Islamophobia necessary?

For this reason, as a human rights charity, RECC acknowledged that there is the need for the discussion concerning Islamophobia as a hate crime. We aim to come together as a community to learn about and discuss the issues, experiences concerning Islamophobia and to reach conclusions how this can be tackled and find out what citizens think should happen.

Who are the collaborating and supporting organisations?

The event is in collaboration with One Place East, Islamophobia Response Unit, Educate Against Islamophobia , Islamophobia Awareness Month bringing together a range of activities with exhibitions, workshops and open discussion with a panel of speakers. The event is also supported by Redbridge Faith Forum and Ilford Islamic Centre.
