Online Book Talk: Gender, Sexuality and Law Research Cluster Kitchen Table Series

Wednesday 15 February 2023, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm GMT, online (UK)

Keele University’s Gender, Sexuality and Law Research Cluster are very excited to continue our online Kitchen Table Series in 2023. We are pleased to invite you to a book talk on 15 February 1.30-3pm GMT with: Dr Alexander Sasha Kondakov, University College Dublin, Ireland on his recently published book ‘Violent Affections: Queer Sexuality, Techniques of Power, and Law in Russia

Violent Affections uncovers techniques of power that work to translate emotions into violence against queer people. Based on analysis of over 300 criminal cases of anti-queer violence in Russia before and after the introduction of ‘gay propaganda’ law, the book shows how violent acts are framed in emotional language by perpetrators during their criminal trials. It then utilises an original methodology of studying ‘legal memes’ and argues that these individual affective states are directly connected to the political violence aimed at queer lives more generally.

Alexander Sasha Kondakov is an assistant professor at the School of Sociology, University College Dublin, Ireland. Kondakov’s work is primarily focused on law and sexuality studies, more specifically on queer sexualities.

In the Series we convene a range of speakers throughout the year to discuss online (many from our kitchen tables!) contemporary socio-legal issues relating to gender, sexuality and law. Please share this info with interested students and networks! We hope to see you there.
