Tackling Homophobic, Biphobic & Transphobic Bullying in Schools – North West Teacher Training Conference

Tuesday 8 March 2016, 09:00-16:30pm, Manchester

Thanks to funding from the Department for Education (DfE) and Government Equalities Office (GEO), Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) are undertaking a new and exciting programme of work to educate against Homophobic, Biphobic and Transphobic (HBT) bullying.

A series of four regional Teacher Training (TT) conferences will be held in England during 2015/16 to develop teachers’ skills and knowledge in recognising, responding to and educating against HBT bullying.

The conferences will draw on the experience of SRtRC in delivering highly successful Teacher Training and Initial Teacher Training (ITT) about racism and far-right extremism.

In 2014, almost nine in ten secondary school teachers (86 per cent) and almost half (45 per cent) of primary school teachers surveyed for Stonewall’s YouGov poll said pupils in their school, regardless of sexual orientation, have experienced homophobic bullying.

In the expression of Homophobic, biphobic and transphobic and racist attitudes and behaviours, reporting and recording is important, as are the techniques to effectively challenge the existing prejudice.
