Webinar – Hate-motivated Acts: Intersectional Perspectives

Thursday 8 December 2022, 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm EST, online (Montreal, Canada)

Hate-motivated acts are becoming more prominent in our societies. However, some groups are more likely to be targeted by hate-motivated acts than others. Members of one or more stigmatized and marginalized groups are at increased risk of experiencing hate. The purpose of this presentation is to look at the causes and consequences of these differences in lived experiences. In order to do so, it is important to explore some of the conceptual underpinnings; namely, the notions of vulnerability, victimization and intersectionality. In doing so, it is possible to arrive at a better understanding of the different lived experiences of hate.

Specific Objectives:

  • Define important concepts
  • Illustrate the factors leading to differential experience of hate
  • Analyze the individual and social consequences of hate
  • Recognize behaviors to avoid and helpful practices to promote dialogue with targeted individuals
